The Church of Scotland

Church of Scotland Logo/Emblem
The Church of Scotland is a living community of people throughout Scotland and beyond. One of the names by which we are known is the Kirk.

Our aim is to worship God by following the teachings and example of Jesus Christ.

We express our love for God by our love and practical care for each other and for those who we live with and encounter in our daily lives.

There are over 600,000 adult members of the Church of Scotland and many thousands more children, young people and adherents. This makes us one of the largest organisations in Scotland, if not the largest.

Over 100,000 young people take part in a huge range of Church-based youth organisations, led by around 15,000 volunteers.

As well as around 1400 ministers serving throughout Scotland, the Church has around 2000 professional and administrative support staff. They help the Church deliver a wide range of practical services to communities all across Scotland. These services include social care, rehabilitation, family support, counselling, community service, support services in education and health both at home and overseas, and the media, publishing and other areas of communication.

The Presbytery of Hamilton

With 78 charges, the Presbytery of Hamilton is the third largest in Scotland (after Glasgow and Edinburgh). The Presbytery meets 8 times a year, normally on the first Tuesday of the month in Motherwell: Dalziel St Andrew's church halls at 7pm (in June it meets on the third Tuesday, and there are no meetings in January, April, July or August).

At its meeting on 20th June, 1995 the Presbytery approved the following Mission Statement as one which reflects its role:

To bring glory to God in working to advance Christ's Kingdom within the bounds of the Presbytery and beyond.

In so doing:
  1. To work positively to ensure that there is a strong Christian witness within each community in the Presbytery, with opportunities provided for meaningful worship, fellowship, teaching and service at a local level.
  2. To ensure that appropriate support, fellowship and direction is provided for ministers and lay field staff serving within the Presbytery.
  3. To ensure that the views of the local church are represented on issues of wider concern, and that local congregations are encouraged to respond constructively to local, national and international needs and concerns.
